Cheap Stay in KK - Tune Hotel 1Borneo Kota Kinabalu

Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.

Did you noticed that Tune Hotel has changed their logo? In fact, as short as four letter "TUNE"are widely seen at their hotels at various cities.

While Tune Hotel changed their logo, they also revamped the interior design and changed their previous room service concept.

Last Saturday, I have the opportunity to stay overnight at Tune Hotel 1Borneo Kota Kinabalu before heading to Tuaran on the next day.

With the affordable price from as low as RM75.00, we could enjoy all the hotel facilities available. Featuring with space-efficient, their streamlined rooms are also focus on high-quality basics, such as 5-star beds and powerful hot showers. In addition, the hotel also provides housekeeping services, toiletries, electronic keycard access into rooms, extensive CCTV systems, and 24-hour security, and all are the same throughout all the hotels branches.

To be specific, Tune Hotel 1Borneo Kota Kinabalu located few minutes away from the main entrance of 1Borneo Hypermall. The hotel located near to Government Administration Office, Hospital Likas and non the less, well known universities and colleges such as UMS, UITM and Politeknik.

Do you know that UMS is open for the public for an insight tour especially at their private beach and the pink mosque with a minimum entrance fee.

Not to worry about having a boring stay at the hotel, being one of the comfortable hotel at 1Borneo area or UMS area, we could travel for approximately 15 minutes for hiking at the famous Bukit Botak and Bukit Janggut!

Within 30 minutes, we could enjoy the beautiful sunset view of Sabah at Sabandar (Tuaran) or 15 minutes to Tanjung Lipat for an evening sunset view and chilling with coconut drinks.

Being greet by friendly reception would immediately warm us once we reach the hotel.

During normal traffic hours, it takes about 20 minutes distance from Kota Kinabalu International Airport to the hotel shall be RM13.00 with Grab service. I always appreciate Grab to drive me from one place to another when I am not driving.

Chilling at the lobby would be a nice thing to do, while some may enjoy their time with the high speed internet available, both at the lobby and room.

That's my room for the night!

Comfortable bouncy bed that made my sleep feeling effortless and no aching bone on the next day. Bright lighting that certainly I like the most!
Besides normal hotel stay for one or two days, Tune Hotel 1Borneo Kota Kinabalu also offers special room rates for long term guests as well with inclusive of house keeping service. Foreign students might enjoy staying here while they can enjoy the ample space for them to study while using the high speed internet.

Tune Hotel 1Borneo offers few types of room and one of them is family room for 4 adults and a child.

The next morning we had our breakfast at "Makan Restaurant" and menu served would be Malaysian breakfast with toasts and cereals.

Besides visiting the surrounding area for interesting sighting, other attractions that can easily reachable within 30 minutes would be our Stadium Likas, the Jesselton Point Jetty where we can go to nearby islands, Kiansom Waterfall and Mari-Mari Cultural Village.

For seafood lovers, there are few recommended seafood restaurants namely Gayang Seafood Restaurant and Salut Seafood Restaurant which nearer to the hotel.

However, if we would like to have a quiet stay without leaving the area, we could always go for a movie at the cinema (GSC) inside the hypermall and it just 5 minutes by foot!

Sabah is always happening and if you are planning to visit Kota Kinabalu, we will always welcome you here! ;)

Each of us having our favorite things to do.

For myself, I love to travel and my friends like to date me for short trips too! My next trip would be in May, July and October.

In addition, for a travel and food blogger like me, we always need to keep ourselves updated with gadgets and accessories that are convenient back and forth. There's always a new tools to pick up especially for girls.

As a preparation before flying off, it is a norms to buy something for myself - Skincare, tops, phone camera gadgets (if any)

Now, what are the items that I will bring and where do I shop?

I hardly go to the mall now a days, dislike the hot weather and traffic which sometimes takes hours back and forth. Therefore, online would be the best!

There are two main websites that I normally check and always enjoy shopping with Zalora and Lazada, while one for various fashion range and beauty products, Lazada would be offering almost all kind of items from personal, home appliances and even photography accessories!

Okay, back to my travel packing list - Skincare!

I dislike troubling myself by filling empty small bottles with my existing skincare products, therefore, travel packs' skincare would be my first selection! Found Laneige, a Korean skincare brand having a few types of travel packs and with the availability of Lazada Voucher, it's always a good treat to buy at a cheaper rate whenever possible!

Travel Packing List - Camera / Phone Camera Accessories

Over the years, I owned 5 selfie sticks and recently found myself a convenient one that could use as a tripod that is convenient to travel with, especially for solo traveler, one of the best so far.

The price stated might be cheap, but with Lazada Voucher Code, we could save even more! Boy, I do enjoy shopping with Lazada. I could spend hours for online shopping!

The more we buy, the more we could save when there's a discount. 10%? 20%?

Travel Packing List - New Tops and Dresses

Zalora offers worthy price and quality fashion items and I see that it is convenient to buy with them. It takes only three working days to arrive in Kota Kinabalu.

Checked with ShopCoupons, they havingZalora Promo Code as well!

I would love to take photos with fashionable outfits that will suits a place/ theme. Say like, Thailand - casual with short pants and Hawaiian inspired attires would look perfectly fine in frame.

Or maybe a Classic Parisian theme when travel to England.

Travel Packing List - Disposable Panties

When I travel for a week, certainly I bring along disposable panties and usual panties to avoid some unpleasant odor of non dry event. It's all depends on how is the itinerary would be and how long we staying at one hotel.

Travel Packing List - Bags

Normally I will bring two to three types of bags - Backpack, Sling bag and shopping bag! Just to ease my headache and backpack will be a good idea to put anything and made our helpful whenever possible.

I guess that's all for my travel packing list essentials. ;)

By the way, here's a travel packing checklist that might be useful to you!

By the way, don't forget to bring some medicine for emergency too!We don't want to have diarrhea while traveling right?

Perak : Guide to Ipoh - 22 Must Eat and Visit (V.1)

Ipoh, Malaysia.

Recently with the TV Show by Chapman To on "Pick Me Up to Malaysia" (杜汶泽 - 走佬去马来!) and scenes on Ipoh with a few familiar and recommended spots for local food, inspired me to write my list on "Guide to Ipoh".

What I could say about Ipoh Food? It just original and tasted local, I miss the food from Ipoh, in fact. The smooth textured chicken, the roasted coffee, they are delicious!

During my trip at Ipoh, we stayed at the same hotel for twice and will be staying at the same hotel in the future as well. Convenient and near (by foot) to a list of delicious pastries shop and must eat eateries. Morever, Grab is cheap in Ipoh.

Back to the Guide to Ipoh, every where are packed with people when it comes to food. Just go for it!

1) Ipoh Yong Tau Fu

Stuffed meat varieties and small eateries are recommended in Ipoh. Usually, this eatery can be found at stalls at coffee shops / restaurants.

2) Restoran Tauge Ayam Lou Wong 老黄
49, Jalan Yau Tet Shin, Taman Jubilee

The first meal that we had when we reach Ipoh on our first trip. I love Ipoh's Kuey Tew, thin layer and soft when we munch. Chicken meat was tender.

3) Restoran Tauge Ayam Ong Kee 安记芽菜鸡沙河粉
48, Jalan Yau Tet Shin, Taman Jubilee

Chicken meat are absolutely delicious in Ipoh, no wonder Ipoh are home of chicken! Lou Wong and Ong Kee serving the same chicken rice and other selection.

4) Lam Fong Biscuit 南方饼家
52, Jalan Yau Tet Shin, Taman Jubilee

Pastries are well known in Ipoh. One of them would be the freshly baked Kaya puff of this old bakery.

5) Funny Mountain Soya Bean & Tau Fu Fah 奇峰豆腐花
50, Jalan Mustapa Al-bakri, Taman Jubilee

It was my first to have such a silky texture Soya Beancurd. Serving day time and close when their Soy bean curd and Soy bean drinks sold out! Even outsiders just placed their order in bulk for take away.

6) Ayam Garam Aun Kheng Lim 宴琼林盐焗鸡

The most convenient take away outlet for hot seller Salted Chicken. We may bring back home if we wanted too!

7) Ipoh Tuck Kee 怡记保德
61, Jalan Yau Tet Shin, Taman Jubilee

The original fragrance of WOK! Famous for most of their noodles selection! The colours and presentation are not appetizing, but they taste good though.

8) Restoran Xin Quan Fang 新泉芳咖喱面茶餐室
174, Jalan Sultan Iskandar, Taman Jubilee

By foot, we could walk to the nearby Curry Noodle restoran. However, I don't favour much on their noodle and we waited for quite a long time.

9) Paris Restaurant
190, Jalan Sultan Iskandar, Taman Jubilee

Hakka Mee and Stuffed Meat various that recommended to have here.

10) Street Arts

Street art are trending at many places in Malaysia. The fame started from Penang and Ipoh. And it's Instagram frame caption too.

11) Concubine Lane 二奶巷

The old street of Ipoh, lots of snacks and souvenirs to buy!

12) Kafe Yoon Wah 元华饮食阁 雪花啤酒

We had one of the special beer here at Ipoh - The Snow Beer! Start from evening and some how we can also have dinner and supper here too.

"Snow Beer"雪花啤酒

13) Ho Yan Hor 何人可

The history of herbal tea. Located near to Concubine Lane. No entrance fee.

14) Restoran Thean Chun 天津茶室
73, Jalan Bandar Timah

Egg Custard is recommended from this restaurant!

15) 新源隆 (Sin Yoon Loong)
15A, Jalan Bandar Timah

The first white coffee. I had pure white coffee daily when I was at Ipoh. Not express 3 in 1!

16) Nam Heong White Coffee Shop 南香茶餐室
2, Jalan Bandar Timah

Does Old Town White Coffee rings the bell? One of the large franchise chain in Malaysia.

Nam Heong is the origin of Old Town White Coffee. Just like we said, White Coffee is a must try in Ipoh! The origin of roasted coffee.

Other than White Coffee, they do have varieties of eateries, from noodles to fresh egg tarts and other local snacks.

17) "Dessert Street" (Tong Shui Gai) 糖水街
Jalan Sultan Ekram, Taman Jubilee

The local ask us to walk... walk... walk and you can see XXX building and walk until you reach the end, you will see a lot of stalls. And that's Tong Shui Gai, where the youngster hang out during the night. Unlike KK, we go for cafes or milk tea. :D

Personally, perhaps Tong Shui Gai offers varieties of shaved ice and fruits, that's why it was named such. We could have fried noodles and more local Wok fried meals as well. *Street Food*

18) Ming Court Hong Kong Dim Sum 明阁香港点心
36, Jalan Leong Sin Nam, Kampung Jawa

Many recommended us to try the Dim Sum by Ming Court. I didn't manage to try it whereby limited selection of Dim Sum if compared with the opposite huge Dim Sum restaurant.

19) Foh San Dim Sum 富山茶楼
51, Jalan Leong Sin Nam, Kampung Jawa

Foh San Dim Sum have the largest outlet of whole building and two floors of place of customers. Creative dim sum served by the restaurant.

20) Temples
Referring to various cave temples in Ipoh

i) Sam Poh Tong (Cave) Temple 三宝洞
ii) Ling Sen (Cave) Temple 灵仙洞
iii) Kek Lok (Cave) Temple 极乐洞
iv) Nam Thean (Cave) Temple 南天洞

I was amaze with the beautiful cave temples in Ipoh that built and designed by the nature. As a Buddhist, the temples calm us quite a lot although it might be a little creepy in some sense.

By the way, do visit the temples before 5pm, many will be closed that that hour.

21) Gua Tempurung
Pusat Pelancongan Gua Tempurung, 31600 Gopeng, Perak.

Tempurung Cave is popular among spelunkers, or caving enthusiasts. More than 3 km long, it is one of the longest caves in Peninsula Malaysia.

Tempurung Cave might not be in our list if we are heading to Kampar or any other town in Perak.

22) Ipoh Railway Station
Stesen KTM Ipoh.

"The Ipoh railway station is a Malaysian train station located at the south-western side of and named after the capital city of Ipoh, Perak. It serves as the main railway terminal for the state under Keretapi Tanah Melayu offering KTM ETS services, as well as handling freight trains."

If I'm not mistaken, Ipoh Railway Station has been there for at least 100 years of history.

Now... How to go to Ipoh?

There are two ways.
1) By railway (KTM ETS)
From KL Central to destination.
or

2) By long distance bus ride
From airport / KL Central.

or

3) Rent a Car

Experiencing China Town with Pacific Express Hotel (Kuala Lumpur)

Kuala Lumpur, W. Persekutuan (K.L.)

For us Malaysian, it's hardly for us explore Kuala Lumpur in details. It's just shopping, shopping and working trip at most.

Recently, after my trip to KL for Bridging Guilds International ’s event by Girl Guides Association Malaysia for the guilds (I'm an adult guide), I have the chance to experience the historical faces KL. It's my first to stay very close to Petaling Street, just in the center of KL.

With my mom and aunts, we were staying at one superior room and another with standard room. Surprisingly, my aunt's never been to this side of KL. The prefer to stay at familiar place such as Mid Valley. 😅

Premier Room

Basically, it is a family room for 3 - 4 person.

Superior Room

Spacious and comfortable room size would be one good condition for us.

 Standard Room

Similar to superior, just room size differences.

My room overlooking to Petaling Street's entrance.

Our view from our room at 8th floor.

Welcome Notes

Over looking entrance to China town (Petaling Street)

Half of our day spending our time at nearby tourist spots, afraid not! We took quite a number of photographs, especially at the Kwai  Chai Hong (鬼仔巷).

Piggy pastry

From the old time favourite Fong Wong Pastry, opposite Petaling Street food court.

I'm in love with the building sculptures that we could see the local authority is trying their best to uplift the building and keeping the history alive, to preserve the old KL.

The street behind our hotel. it could lead us to Central Market for art shopping.

The white building ahead is Pacific Express Hotel, Chinatown, formerly it was a mall and currently the highest floor shall be the unit for Fui Chiu Association use.

The Cafe at Pacific Express Hotel

Serving Malaysian breakfast with fried noodles, eggs, fried rice and toasts as well.

We do have the option to book our rooms with breakfast during our stay.

There's always an option to walk down to Petaling Street for some local breakfast along the street!

Central Market

Gorgeous place that we could spent hours. Back then, Central Market is less crowded with less things to see.

Now, there's tourists and local that will be there for dine in and shopping. Non the less, weekly traditional dances show. How lovely is that!

The opening of Rooftop @ Le Meridien and Au Soleil

The rain was drizzling on and off, but we were certainly lucky that we are able to see a perfect purple pink sunset from the rooftop.

I always think how should one hotel/ business operator operates when there's actually involving the weather, people go there it's because of the view.  What if raining? It would be awful and daily worry to carry the necessary from under the sun and to avoid the rain. Oh my.

The sunny smile won't let us down!

We had a number of drinks and we enjoyed our evening with friends and new friends as well.

Thanks to Le Meridien for having us on this private preview.

Surprisingly it was good, and I have returned for the second in a month.

Decent interior design and reasonable pricing too!

Just like the name of the restaurant, Indo Taste serving Indonesian menu with some selection of local Malaysian menu at one section.

For menu such as chicken, speed would be one additional point.

Sino Go Travel : Bangkok - Where to Go? What to Buy? (Female Travellers)

Bangkok, Thailand

Wondering what's "Sino Go Travel"?

It's the name created between four besties and all are Chinese native,  also known as "Sino". While "Go Travel", I should not need to explain more. ;) In fact, I do have series of videos at my Youtube Channel for #SinoGoTravel(Click) and hastag at Instagram.

It was our first oversea trip together, and months ago, we've chosen Bangkok, Thailand as a kick start! Each of us do have the differences and differences to be considered.

DAY 1

From KK to KL for transit and from KL to Bangkok. It took us half a day to reach Bangkok.

There are two accommodations we stayed during our 5 days 4 nights in Bangkok, one at Khao San and another at Pratunam. Both accommodations booked via AGODA.

I have been to Bangkok a few times and basically, I'm the amateur tourist guide for them. We didn't manage to visit some of the landmarks that I highly recommended and especially for first timer.

Two of us prefer to go for sightseeing and another two love to shop, luckily 2 days out of the total 5 days were in the end - SHOPPING for 8 hours and up to more than 10 hours respectively. Places like Chatuchak Weekend Market, Krung Thong Plaza, Platinium Mall and snacks heaven - Big C.

And frankly speaking, shopping was nice when there's similar preference at one place. The big question is - MONEY MATTERS! (lol)

Two of them, shop till broke. (lol) From clothes, snacks, shoes and so many more.

Tuk Tuk ride.

Tuk Tuk is one of the local transportation and it's a tourists must have. For me, I do not recommend Tuk Tuk ride as most of the driver would "slaughter" the tourists. (-_-)

And during our first local place to visit was sight seeing around Khao San area - and temples at most.

Here's the story of our Tuk Tuk ride that day. 70 baht per person and to have a ride for one and half hours, we agreed because one of us wanted to have a ride with Tuk Tuk.

First, the driver brought us to a pier and tried to convince us to take up the long canal ride for 700 baht per person and he tried to go lower to 400 baht per person. However, NO, we did not go for the long canal ride even though one of our itinerary was to visit Ta Ling Chan Floating Market. [In fact, there's cheaper cost available.] (Travel smart)

Next, Wat Indrawiharn - The 32-meter (100-foot) tall standing Buddha of Wat Indrawiharn used to be visible from just about any high vantage point around the old city. Now it's hidden behind the new buildings from Thailand's boom years of the 1980s and 90s. (source)

Next, he brought us to "Tourist Information Centre", it's similar to tour company as they are selling tour packages. I walked out from the centre within two minutes, just to stop the whole nonsense.

Next, another temple at one corner, which I can't recall it while I had quite a long talk with the worker of one of the royal praying event (for the remembrance of former King Rama IX on 13 October 2019) held for our trip in Bangkok. "NO SHORT PANTS" he said and eventually, the conversation made us found out that we were almost being cheated by the Tuk Tuk driver, it's 700 baht for the long canal ride, not per person, but the price for hiring the long canal ride.

Asiatique River Front

We went to Asiatique by Grab, and turn out to be nice to have street food dinner (although slightly pricey as compared with authentic Thai food) there while enjoying the music and environment.

What can we do at Asiatique? Asiatique inclusive of nice dining, shopping outlets, local artisan market, street food market and a theme park.

That's how we ended our first day.
______________________________________________

 DAY 2

May, is a vegetarian and non the less, we may need to dine in at Vegetarian restaurant, kid you not, the breakfast we had was superb and colourful at Mango Vegetarian & Vegan Restaurant and Arts Gallery

And we went to Chatuchak Weekend Market for food and shopping. We saw a lot of Malaysian there as well. Delicious local street food available and fashionable gems for us to check out. Go for massage when tired from shopping and continue shopping after!

Manage to carry along our shopping goodies and by BTS Skytrain - Sukhumvit Line, we headed to Terminal 21.

After Terminal 21, we returned to our hostel at Khao San, took our shower, had a short walk and had a food massage at 11.30pm, while enjoying the clubs scenes opposite.

There's never a rest before 1.00am during our trip at Bangkok.

Fried insects!

Easily spotted at Khao San.

We did not enjoyed much of Khao San street food along the street of our hostel. Seems not as good as those I had at other Bangkok districts.

Foot massages

Thai Beer

DAY 3

Ready to pack and heading Khao Yai (middle Thailand) for day trip.

Frankly, it is better to have 2 days 1 night trip to Khao Yai, where tourists can walk slowly and enjoy various man made themed park. Remember to bring extra Thai Baht for entrance fee!

Hired a tour guide for our trip to Khao Yai, and we were ready at 7.00am and one and half hour to our breakfast at a food court and continued another 1 hour to Dairy Home Organic Outlet for ice cream treats. I have paid for four ice creams with cute cups at 250 baht.

PB Valley

Entrance (tour) fee required.

We had our winery tour at PB Valley, the largest wine yard at Thailand.

Learning about the grapes, how red and white wines were made and tasting the wines by PB valley.

The Blooms

Entrance fee required.

It's a flower gardens and the memorable one would be witnessing the sunflowers. I have been wanted to witness the sunflowers farm personally. We manage to see it, but it wasn't the best blooming season, two more weeks to bloom perfectly or December is the season!

Primo Piazza Khao Yai

or the Little Italy of Thailand is a picturesque inspired Tuscan Village situated in Pak Chong.

Entrance fee required.

We love this place so much! Manage to feed the lambs and Lama Alpaca! So cute!!

Continued with more photos shooting along the plaza and garden.

Palio Khao Yai

continuing with the Little Italy of Thailand situated in Pak Chong.

Palio will be more to shopping streets and we had a very short walk and few photos shooting and we left.

The Chocolate Factory Khao Yai

Did our shopping at the chocolate factory. Price was pricey, but chocolate was delicious.
To end our Khao Yai day trip, we had our tea at their cafe before heading back to Pratunam district, Bangkok.

The must have in Thailand - The iconic VIP Luxury Van!

It's like a party van and in Thai they named it as the VIP Van, and I recalled that I did not book this van, maybe they have upgraded for us?

Due to long holiday weekend in Thailand, it took us more than 5 hours to reach Bangkok from Khao Yai. Normally, it took three (3) hours to reach from one place to another.
_______________________________________________

DAY 4

Vegetarian breakfast at a Vegetarian restaurant, with few minutes walk from our hotel and with the help of Google Map!

It's an Indian restaurant in fact. Tasty, but salty.

After the breakfast, we had a 15 minutes walk from the restaurant to the shopping malls area - Platinum Mall and Krong Thong Plaza.

Initially, we walked to Krong Thong Plaza, as it shall be a wise choice to have a look before heading to the opposite mall - Platinum Mall.

Shopping was good at Krong Thong Plaza, although the building wasn't as classy as Platinum, but the price was just affordable, shop more for cheap and distribution priced! It took us hours at Krong Thong Plaza and available size with be good for us with large sizes. This even made us stayed longer.

Platinum Mall outlets would cost higher and strict on the price, it is a recommended shopping place for high street fashions.

From Platinum Mall, we walked towards Big C/ Central World. 10 minutes walk to Erawan Shrine for praying before heading to Naraya at Central World as Sylvia requested.

The image above was the iconic view of traffic in Bangkok. We had more walking during last two days while carrying those shopping bags and goodies.

Erawan Shrine

The four faced Buddha which I insist to visit and for my prayers.

I do love the pretty hair do by myself! Back here in KK, wasn't that hype to do it.

After You Cafe, Central World

The highly recommended cafe in Thailand, and they even expand their business to Kuala Lumpur.

We had two cafe recommendation, the above dessert with seasonal Mango Sticky Rice and the Chocolate toast with ice cream.

Maybe because of personal preference, I would love to let them see faces of Bangkok, the authentic Royal Thai scene at Khao San, the creative and busy Bangkok business area.

Well, yes and no. Places like The Grand Palace, Wat Arun, Siam Paragon and others, we manage to go for the sight seeing from Grab and SkyTrain. Better than non.

Snacks shopping and Fashion Shopping

Krong Thong Plaza / Platinum Mall / BIG C / 7 Eleven and streets.

Bangkok is a shopping heaven if you love to shop.

Shopping for snacks and must buy, does not limit to 7 Eleven and Big C.

Other must buy snacks in Thailand -here

There's so many must buy list all over the internet. For me during this trip? I did most fashion shopping in Bangkok, less on snacks as previously bought more. I do need to learn the meaning of travel.

DAY 5

Bye Bye Bangkok

Our driver will be fetching us at 12.30pm.

We walk in to a random Thai restaurant for breakfast, and the lady boss gave us local spring rolls for treats! How kind of her! It taste good!

Had a walk nearby the area after breakfast and got ourselves lost.

(lol) We never know what and where will be.

Coffee fixed.

7 Eleven is a must visit in Thailand!

We had fun and a little hiccups along the way. Well, sometimes we need to be considered, not emotionally, but with the sense of humanity to reach a common agreement.

Glad to have this Sino Go Travel trip 2019.

Look forward to the video at my Youtube Channel soon! By the look of their faces, we all are happy!

Date of visit :

It's Celebrity 2-Star Michelin Chef Emmanuel Stroobant & U.S. Potatoes!

Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.
It was a wonderful evening with Chef Emmanuel Stroobant and U.S. Potatoes.

Who doesn't love potatoes?
We always complaint about the carbohydrate, but do you know that Potato has more potassium than a Banana?

And they have 30% Vitamin C that increase our Collagen to have flawless skin!!

An exclusive cooking demo session by the celebrity 2-Star Michelin chef at The Pavilion, Shangri-La Tanjung Aru Resort. We had an enjoyable session watching the chef in action and trying out his scrumptious US Potatoes dishes.

Also present was Indra Balaratnam, Consultant Dietitian and Founder & Owner of Indra Balaratnam Nutrition who gave a talk on the nutritional benefits of US Potatoes.

Hailing from Belgium, Chef Emmanuel Stroobant’s career began at a tender age of 16 with the cleaning of dishes in one of his country’s best restaurants. At 23, he opened his first restaurant in his hometown, Liege.

After traveling the world, he made a life-changing decision by heading to Asia. His maiden stop was to Kuala Lumpur in late 1997 and was awarded the ‘1999 Best Expatriate Chef’ by World Asia Media. In that same year Stroobant and his wife Edina moved to Singapore to yet again experience another unchartered episode. Their first restaurant, Saint Pierre became the only Singapore member of the world-renowned Relais & Châteaux, the prestigious association of the world’s finest hotels and restaurants; and has been awarded 1 Michelin star by the second edition of Michelin Guide Singapore in 2017.

Chef Emmanuel loves working with U.S. Potatoes because of the quality and versatility of the product.  He demonstrated 4 exciting recipes using U.S. potatoes that are sure to excite your guests when you serve them during the coming Christmas and New Year parties.

Chef Emmanuel loves working with potatoes as they are a staple in nearly every cultural cuisine, so they’re uniquely suited to deliver today’s most craved global flavors. Whether you’re looking for a comforting classic or a new contemporary cuisine, with U.S. potatoes, the possibilities are endless. Available in many varieties and formats, U.S. potatoes are always ready to elevate any dish with amazing taste and texture.

Indra Balaratnam is a consultant dietitian who has 22 years of experience in the field of nutrition and dietetics. She runs her own private practice, where she helps her clients to eat healthier. Indra holds professional memberships in the Malaysian Dietitians’ Association, where she is a Past President (Year 2011/2012); member of the American Overseas Dietetics Association (AODA) affiliate of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics of the US.

Indra shared with us the fact that potatoes are actually very nutritious.  Potatoes are naturally fat free, cholesterol free, and low in sodium. In addition, potatoes are an excellent source of vitamin C, and those eaten with the skin are a good source of potassium.  Foods that are good sources of potassium and low in sodium, such as potatoes, may reduce the risk of high blood pressure and stroke.

Ms Indra also shared that although many people these days are worried about their carbohydrate intake, carbohydrates are one of the key nutrients in performance nutrition.  Athletes engaged in high volume and high intensity training require adequate amounts of carbohydrates for energy.  U.S. potatoes are an example of an excellent source of carbohydrates. They are rich in vitamin B6 and C, potassium, folate, fibre and antioxidants. “They are extremely versatile and filling, making it a convenient source for athletes” she elaborated.

 U.S. Potatoes with Caviar

U.S. Russet Potatoes Salad

Watching the Potatoes US video, made me wonder about all the potatoes, there's tons of them under one ground! In fact, I knew even more about Potatoes after the session.
Organizer Potatoes USA is the marketing organization for the 2,500 commercial potato growers operating in the United States. They promote five main good quality potato products: fresh table-stock potatoes, fresh chipping potatoes, seed potatoes, frozen potato products and dehydrated potato products.

Certainly, I had fun during the session with creative dishes by Chef Emmanuel Stroobant that one potato could be presented in such a fine way!

Our night ended with a lucky draw with prizes sponsored by Shangri-La Tanjung Aru followed by a meet & greet session with Chef Emmanuel Stroobant.

THANKS TO POTATOES USA FOR THE EXCLUSIVE EVENING WITH CHEF EMMANUEL STROOBANT!
